The Russell Family from Maryport
I first find my Russells (who I suspect came from around Abbey Town) getting married in Dearham in the 1890's. One of the more prominent families was that of Turner Russell (1832-1918) See William Russell's Notes at Notes - Maryport 1832 by William Russell.
The Obituary of Captain Turner Russell from the Liverpool Daily Mercury and News, April, 1918:
By the passing away of Captain Turner Russell, Liverpool loses one of its oldest shipmasters, and the Merchant service an old and highly esteemed member. The deceased, who had passed his four-score years, had sailed out of the Mersey for the whole of his seagoing career, and consequently had seen all the great changes that have taken place not only in shipping itself, but in Liverpool in particular. In Captain Russell's early days the Liverpool Docks had more the appearance of forests with the numberless long tapering spars that predominated at that time, and when a steamer was more of a novelty than otherwise. Captain Russell lived to see the gradual disappearance of the old Clipper sailing ships which were replaced by the steamer. Captain Russell was a native of Maryport, Cumberland, and during his school days had for a schoolmate the late Sir Thomas Ismay, an early friendship that continued in after life. The early seagoing career of Captain Russell was naturally spent in sailing ships and in the year 1855 he joined the Brig Breeze as Mate, remaining in her for two years, when he went Mate of the Brig Rothay for another two years. Both of these vessels were owned by Messers Lamport and Holt. On leaving this vessel he appears to have severed his connection for all time with the windjammer, for he was next found as Mate of the steamship Plantagenet, this being in 1859, this vessel belonging to the same owners. In the same year he received his first appointment of the steamer Cleator as commander, but was shortly transferred to the Talisman, and later to the Saladin, in which vessels he made voyages to the West Indies, Brazils, New York and back to Liverpool. These vessels were owned by Alfred Holt, but were later sold to the West Indian Company, Liverpool. Captain Russell remained on shore for three months acting as Marine Superintendent, when he took command of the steamship Galileo (Lamport & Holt) in which he remained for about two years. He next took command of the steamship Achilles, owned by A. Holt & Co., this being in 1866, remaining in the vessels of this firm until 1877 when he was appointed Marine Superintendent, and in 1889 he joined the staff in Water Street and has been a highly esteemed employee of this great shipping firm. Of the different ships he commanded Captain Russell's favorite was the Achilles. This steamer was barque-rigged, had a crew of sixty-three and carried a cargo of tea of about 3800 tons. He considered her a great ship when he got all of his canvas to draw, and often remarked what a fine sailing ship she would have made if only the engines had been taken out of her. Her steaming speed was only about nine knots, but with this steam power and the aid of her canvas Captain Russell achieved the feat of winning the tea race from Foo Chow around the Cape, beating the West Indian, a steamer that had been put on this service against the Achilles, by a fortnight. This was considered a record run. Captain Russell used to relate that when he wired his arrival at Gravesend the late Mr. Alfred Holt would not believe it until it was confirmed by the London agent. There were certain little incidents in the life of Captain Russell which he was rather pleased to recall. One was when he made his last trip from the West Indies via New York, and during his stay at the later port he dined at Delmonico's with Mr. F. DeLesseps (of Suez Canal fame), Sir Richard Burton, African explorer, and Capt. Sims, of the Alabama. Captain Russell was one of the last to see the ill-fated captain, for he passed her in the Bay of Biscay prior to her floundering. His long and continuous service with Messers A. Holt & Co., was a source of pride to him, for he recognized that few were included in the same category as himself.
